Which screen test do you need?
- A dot that never changes — the dead pixel test cycles through black, white and primary colours so dead, stuck and hot pixels stand out.
- A plain bright screen — the white screen is useful to spot dust, dark pixels and uneven backlight, or as a soft light source.
- A plain dark screen — the black screen reveals bright pixels, backlight bleed and glow in a dark room.
How to look at a screen properly
Clean the screen first, so dust is not mistaken for pixels. Look straight on, at a normal viewing distance, then up close. Turn off night-light or blue-light filters, dynamic contrast and other picture effects, because they change what the plain colours look like. The page only draws colours: you are the detector, so take your time.
