What a black screen is useful for

  • Bright (hot) pixels: a pixel that is always lit shows as a sharp coloured or white dot on black. For a full check of all pixel types, use the dead pixel test.
  • Backlight bleed and glow on LCD screens: in a dark room, light leaking from the edges or corners shows up on black. IPS glow changes when you move your head; bleed stays put.
  • OLED screens: pure black should be fully off. Any visible glow or uneven dark patches are worth noting.
  • Cleaning: dust and smudges are visible on black too, especially under side light.

How to check for backlight bleed

  1. Darken the room and wait a minute for your eyes to adapt.
  2. Set the monitor to the brightness you normally use, not maximum.
  3. Open the black screen and look straight at the centre from your usual viewing distance.
  4. Take a photo only if it matches what you see: phone cameras exaggerate bleed at long exposures.

Some glow is normal on most LCD panels. What counts as a defect depends on the maker's policy and on whether it disturbs normal use.
