Xbox controller test

Connect your Xbox controller to a computer and press any button. Buttons are labelled the Xbox way — A, B, X, Y, LB, RB, LT, RT, View and Menu — so you can check each one quickly.

No controller detected yet. Connect one and press any button.

  1. Connect the controller by USB cable or Bluetooth before testing, and close apps that might take exclusive control of it (for example Steam Big Picture or DS4Windows).
  2. Click on this page, then press any button on the controller. Browsers only reveal a controller after a real button press.
  3. Still nothing? Try another USB cable or port, re-pair over Bluetooth, or try a Chromium-based browser or Firefox. Some controllers only work in a specific mode (for example XInput or DirectInput).

Vibration (rumble)

Connect a controller, press a button, then start a short vibration. You can stop it at any time.

Connect the controller to a computer

  • USB: plug in with a data USB cable (USB-C for Series X|S, micro-USB for most Xbox One controllers).
  • Bluetooth: Xbox Series X|S controllers and later Xbox One models support it. Hold the pair button on top until the Xbox button flashes quickly, then pair from your computer's Bluetooth settings.
  • Xbox Wireless Adapter: on Windows, the adapter connects controllers without Bluetooth.
  • Press any button with this page open to make the controller appear.

What to check

  • A, B, X, Y, bumpers and D-pad: each turns green once pressed. A D-pad direction that triggers its neighbour often points to wear.
  • LT and RT: squeeze slowly; the value should climb smoothly to 1.00. On Elite controllers, check that the trigger stops are open.
  • Sticks: rotate fully, then release and watch the dot. Measure drift with the stick drift test.
  • Rumble: test each motor with the vibration buttons.

Limits

Impulse triggers, the Share button on some systems, Elite paddles and profile switches are not always exposed as separate buttons in browsers. Behaviour can differ between Windows, macOS and the console. Controller firmware updates are installed with the Xbox Accessories app.

Questions

My Xbox controller is not detected — what now?

Press a button while the page is focused, try a different cable (some charge only), update the controller firmware with the Xbox Accessories app, and close programs that capture controllers.

Does it work with Xbox 360 controllers?

Wired Xbox 360 controllers generally work on Windows and appear with the same button layout.
