Spacebar speed test

Click the box and hit the spacebar as fast as you can. The timer starts with your first press and the result shows presses per second. It is a game, not a diagnostic: to check whether a key works, use the keyboard test.

Click the box, then press the spacebar as fast as you can. The timer starts with the first press.

Only separate presses count — holding the bar (auto-repeat) does not. Best scores are saved only in this browser.

How to play

  1. Pick a Duration: 5, 10, 15, 30 or 60 seconds (10 by default).
  2. Click the box so it has focus. Nothing happens until you press the spacebar.
  3. The timer starts with your first press. Keep pressing until it reaches zero.
  4. Read Presses and Per second. If you beat your previous score for that duration, it becomes Your best.
  5. Press the spacebar again to start a new run, or Reset. Clear best scores deletes your saved results.

How presses are counted

  • Each count is a separate key-down of the physical Space key (code Space). Auto-repeat events produced by holding the bar are ignored, so holding it down scores nothing.
  • Events generated by scripts are ignored too.
  • Per second is the total number of presses divided by the chosen duration.
  • If the box loses focus during a run (you click elsewhere or switch window or tab), the run is cancelled.
  • For one second after a run ends, presses are ignored so that a last tap does not start a new run by accident.
  • Best scores are stored separately for each duration in this browser only, and nothing is sent to a server.

Not a keyboard diagnostic

A high score does not prove the spacebar is healthy, and a low one does not mean it is broken: the result depends mostly on your fingers and technique, and also on the keyboard and the duration you choose. There is no reference value. A spacebar with switch chatter can even register one tap as two and inflate your score.

Questions

Does holding the spacebar count?

No. Only separate presses count. The browser marks the events produced while a key is held as repeats, and the test ignores them.

Where is my best score saved?

In this browser only, using local storage. It is not uploaded and will not appear on another device. Private windows and clearing site data remove it.

Does it work on a phone?

Only with a physical keyboard. On-screen keyboards often do not report the Space key as a physical key, so their presses may not count.
