Printer test page

Print one sheet to check the most common printer problems: missing colours, streaks, faded black, blurry text, misalignment and wrong scaling. Choose A4 or US Letter, or download the PDF.

How to print the test page

  1. Choose the paper size loaded in your printer: A4 or US Letter.
  2. Press Print test page, or download the PDF and print it from a PDF viewer.
  3. In the print dialog, set scale to 100% / Actual size (not Fit to page), switch Background graphics on and use normal quality.
  4. Compare the printed sheet with the checklist at the bottom of the page.

Only the test sheet is printed: menus, text and anything else on this page are left out.

Reading the printed page

  • A colour patch is missing, pale or the wrong colour: that ink is empty or its nozzles are blocked. Run your printer's nozzle check and cleaning from its maintenance menu or app.
  • White lines or streaks through patches and ramps: blocked nozzles on inkjets; on laser printers, a dirty or worn drum or a scratched component.
  • Grey steps run together or black looks brown or green: the black cartridge is low or the printer is mixing colours to make black.
  • Small text is blurry or doubled: the print head may need alignment, or the paper type setting does not match the paper.
  • The frame is cut off or the ruler is not 100 mm: the page was scaled. Check the 100% setting and the paper size in the print dialog first.

About the PDF and the colours

The PDFs use real CMYK colour for the C, M, Y and K patches, the grey steps and the CMY ramps, and RGB for the R, G and B patches. Your printer driver still converts them to its own inks, so the printed colours depend on the driver, paper and settings. This page is a visual check, not a colour calibration.

Printing the browser page and printing the PDF can look slightly different: the browser and your PDF viewer render the page with different engines. If the two disagree, the PDF is the more reliable reference.

Limits

A web page cannot see your printer, read ink or toner levels or start a cleaning cycle. It only sends a page to the printer you choose. Model-specific diagnostics, such as the nozzle check pattern, are printed from the printer's own menu or software.

Questions

How much ink does the test page use?

It is mostly white with small patches, so it uses roughly as much ink as a page of text with a few images. Print it when you need it rather than as routine maintenance.

Why are the edges cut off?

Most printers cannot print to the very edge of the paper. The frame sits 12.7 mm (half an inch) from the edge, which fits nearly all printers at 100% scale. If it is still cut, the page is being scaled or the wrong paper size is selected.

Can I print it without the website?

Yes. Download the PDF once and print it any time; it works without an internet connection.
